GROOVIN' Up Your Hi-Hats - w/ Syncopation (Lesson 2)
Larnell is awesome.
16.25” is perfect… I’m partial to the 747 for that reason. I’ll give these a try soon.
I’ve got one tip that I’d say is the most important. Especially since this is the context of a worship musician. You’ve got to spend time with God. You’ve got to make sure your hearts in the right place, that you showed up to serve, you showed up to worship. You definitely have to practice, we are commanded to play skilfully before the Lord. But a lot of things actually take care of themselves when your heart is in the right place and you work hard to keep it there. If we don’t have unity offstage, we’re not going to have it on stage. Love God, love each other, have a heart of service and you will do a great job as a worship musician. By the way, great video! I really love working with drummers, locking in that groove. Less can definitely be more, especially when you’re trying to lead a congregation. I’ve been playing bass for 20+ years (maybe 30+). Both in churches and in bands.
GREAT TEACHER SIR REGARDS TO YOU
Wow; Seriously?
Nice! Dang Beatdown, you could play with two sticks off a tree and still macke’m sound great! 🤣 I’ve been a Dave Weckl .56 diam., 16.25 length, medium taper barrel tip stick fan for decades. Recently, I tried Nick D’Virgilio signature sticks, but they were shorter and heavier thus wasn’t working for me. Going from a barrel to an acorn tip after so long made it more uncomfortable. By your description, it sounds like Larnell’s signatures are similar to Nick’s. Thicker yet, though longer with a longer taper and acorn tip. Though I like the length, likely the weight will bring me back to the Weckl’s. Always interesting to see what new spec stick variations come about.

When I think of promark, I do not think of a long taper (or any taper), I just think of 2 thick, unmatched slim jims with giant oval beads at the end... Love Larnell Lewis, though.
Who else plays naked?
Looking forward to trying these - I keep hoping they'll offer some firegrains with nylon tips!
Great stick review, Rob! Allow me to be the first to request a drum duet video with you and Larnell. That would rock!! (You deserve your own stick, too. Hope Promark is listening.)
To Bad Neil P was not in that picture
I didn't know Rich Brown had a twin Brother!
Well…not twins, but yeah 🙂
What cymbals are you playing in this vid ? They sound freakin' amazing. Obviously Paiste but what line ?
Not bad, eh? 😊 They’re 18” Traditionals on my left, 18” Dark Energy on my right, my new 20” Traditionals Light Ride and a 12” Signature splash
Thank you Mr. Beatdownn Brown, watching your videos for about 4 years now... Definitely made me a better drummer... I use 5a Fire grane, now, looking forward to trying these, Larnell Lewis signatures.. GOD BLESS you and family.
Ordered a pair!
You’ll dig em
I dont know, this seems like its for people that already have the independence.
What's up with Canada having so many bad ass drummers? And Drumeo is Canadian too? Definitely punching above weight class considering population.
We out here, man 😊🇨🇦
Dude and some of the best instructors teaching all over North America , And these guys are Pipe Drum players that also play set , John Fisher for one , Many of the Pipe band drummers have placed first in world competitions,
I'm hoping they come out with the Larnell Lewis signature hand and foot pack. If I can get those I can lathe my own sticks from the pine tree in my back yard and still be great.
Bad as hell!!!!!! Yall must be twins!!!!
Dont picture everybody as naked.
Rob...have you ever messed with Stick Control #33? It has Transformed a lot of my drum life. RLRR LRRL or LRLL RLLR
Grabbed a pair of these myself. Lighter/less finish compared to other fire grain pairs I have.
I bought them just to support but I struggled playing with them. 😢
Sasso did the 1000th episode in Italian to tank the episode. Get the hint. The bridge w/ Sasso, who was once a regular, was burnt years ago.
Honestly I don't worry a whole lot about sticks. Cause well they break. Gimme a bundle pack of 5b's and let me hit shit. But I'm not much of an accomplished drummer just a Neanderthal really
I feel that. I personally just like the design and feel. I drum for church and they live stream. It looks cool on camera. Either than that I dont really care. Just give me sticks and I'll shed away.
My man!!! Always coming thru with good info and videos…
Thumbs up for Larnell ànd Rob! My personal pick is 7a rebound firegrains... I have tiny hands, you see 😅
So when is the Rob Brown Signature Stick coming out?
Ooooh man. Could you imagine 🤩 Maybe one day
@@RobBeatdownBrownI’d cop it 🔥
Cool, congrats to Larnell! But sadly, having tried Firegrain once I won't buy it as it hurts my hands a bit more than usual precisely because it's more hardy and thus the shock is not as much absorbed by the stick. (And yes, I use proper technique and don't grip my sticks too hard) It doesn't help that my hands are that of a piano player, maybe that's one reason! My go to sticks are Dave Weckl signature sticks from Vic Firth, btw.
I used the first gen Weckl sticks for a long time back in the day.
Mine just arrived this past Monday. Great feel. Nice balance. At first look, I thought the tips were a little large but I really like how they sound on both Hi/Hat and Ride Cymbal. My first experience with Promark in a minute and with the Fire Stick model. 🔥 👍🏻
I really like those sticks. They also look cool. With what you were playing I really detected the influences of Steve Gadd, Stewart Copeland, and Mark Brzezicki. I got to see all three drummers live. Steve Gadd was performing with James Taylor, in Edmonton, in 2016. I saw Steward Copeland performing with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, performing to the silent film, Ben Hur, a few years ago. I saw Mark Brzezicki when he was drumming for Procol Harum, when they were performing with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, in 1992. Cheers, Rob! 👍🏻👍🏻✌️🥁🇨🇦
Those are some pretty specific and bang on observations, man. Especially Mark. You’ve got an ear for drummers for sure 👊🏽
@@RobBeatdownBrown I wish I could see you live. You sound amazing. Cheers!
Love me some larnell
For guitarists, this is like when you go to use your buddy's pick & find out how much different & better it is for certain techniques.
And a 1/4” longer than standard 16”, which I love that little extra length. I love these sticks. Already have several pairs.
You are the man!!!!!!!
That look! Reminds me of the story of when Vinnie C. played The Black Page for Frank Zappa, sight reading for the very first time. While playing this super complicated piece of music, he grabs a piece of sushi and eats it, then pushes his glasses up, like the music wasn’t challenging at all to him. This is what your look says to me! Thanks for always sharing such greatly informative and enjoyable ideas with us all. Have a great summer.
Thanks for this relevant approach that demistify drum tuning, it really helps to turn the keys without mind complications and more than everything, it goes straight to the point. I'm sure this kind of mindset is also a huge source of freedom and happinness when playing, which certainly makes us sound better or at least feel true authentic good vibes, kind of essence of drumming. Your snare sounds so good.
I'm a (now semi-retired) bass player with 40 years of gigs behind me and I agree pretty much with everything you said. I played mostly rock covers, but the points you made apply to most genres. I'm a traditional player- it's the song that's important, not the ability as you so eloquently put it, noodling way up here. Why buy a bass if you just want to play up at the dusty end? There are guitars for that. I'd also add another essential thing: learn more songs! Each new song you learn will teach you something. Tone is less vital for basses than guitars- in my experience, nobody (except possibly other bass players!) listens to the bass- as long as it's there, you're doing your job right. My Number One piece of advice is LISTEN! Especially listen to the drummer- if you regularly play with the same drummer, listen to their breaks and fills and learn to recognise them so that when he or she starts one, you can follow what they're doing a play along with it.
We just focus on having fun in worship instead of being professionally perfect
I play with a really top lead guitarist. He never says anything against playing in the high register. He just encourages me to go for it. As long as I keep the groove timing going
I play with a really top lead guitarist. He never says anything against playing in the high register. He just encourages me to go for it. As long as I keep the groove timing going
That's why I refuse to play it now..
Rob, was that an Evans E Ring you were putting on the snare head? I loved the lower tuning, it was really fat. Were the lugs finger tight on that tuning?
Great advice bro!!!
Great lesson🤩 Just learning to play at 62 years old and your teaching style makes it so simple Thank you🙏
Are these variations called inversions or displacements?
What about Phil ehart
Man, this is exactly what I was looking for! Not all of this “learn this 10 amazing fills” and so on You’re giving the juice of it Thanks a lot!
Is he Rich Brown's bro?
